High Impact Word Study

Learn how to effectively use Words Their Way to assess and identify the spelling stages of your students, tailor the learning of spelling through word study activities that support students in their spelling development and create a positive approach to the teaching and learning of spelling. This workshop is designed for educators who are current users, or recent adopters, of Words Their Way.

Description

Words Their Way

Words Their Way is a teacher-directed, student-centred approach to vocabulary growth and spelling development whereby students engage in a variety of word study activities related to sound, pattern and meaning activities, sorting pictures and words. It caters for differentiated learning in the classroom, rather than a one-size-fits-all solution.

Words Their Way: High Impact Word Study provides teachers with a deep understanding of how to engage students in spelling instruction that is learner-centred, engages critical thinking and problem-solving skills. The workshops provide hands-on learning for teachers so they can develop their own expertise in understanding how English spelling makes sense and how to cater to the diverse learning needs in their classrooms. This workshop aims to explore authentic assessments that give insights into how children learn and think about words, help teachers transform their classroom practices and provide next steps for the learner on the spelling continuum.

Learning Outcomes:

At the end of this workshop, participants should be able to:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of how Words Their Way supports best practice in literacy instruction
